It's a world of laughter, a world of tears...
After many, many months of gearing up for it, we're now about one week away from the opening of the Cartoon Art Museum's newest exhibition, The Art and Flair of Mary Blair. More than fifty pieces of one of the all-time great Disney artists will be on display, many of which have never been seen by the public.

You can buy the book of the same name here, although what you *really* need to do is book yourself a flight to San Francisco as soon as humanly possible. Our Edward Gorey exhibition runs through January, as does our Lark Pien spotlight, I Am Ten, and you can also check out the work of Hellen Jo in our Small Press Spotlight (along with our permanent collection of classic comic strips, political cartoons, animation and other stuff).

And just to whet your appetites a bit, here are some choice images from the exhibition, starting with a Baker's Chocolate ad:

And some Alice In Wonderland concept art:

More pictures after the cut:

More Alice:

Cinderella:

The cover to I Can Fly (we'll have the original cover art and some interior pages on display, too):

Here's Mary in her studio:

it's a small world concept art:

And Susie, The Little Blue Coupe:

Hi I accidentally came across your website while googling for Mary Blair. I'm a big fan of her and I'm glad that you posted up some nice concept art done by Mary Blair! Unfortunately I live in a far away country 18 hrs away (by plane) in Singapore and I doubt I can afford an air ticket just for this exhibition. =( do post up more pics of her art!

Ps: I was wondering what happens to her art when the exhibition closes? I will be in the US during Dec 2008 and I was wondering if there's ANY chance of seeing Mary Blair's works.

There aren't any plans for the Mary Blair show to travel, but I've talked to a few people who've expressed interest in seeing it in other venues.

If you can't make it to San Francisco by the end of March, your best option to see her originals is probably to befriend her family or become a beloved animator at Pixar. I'll be sure to announce it on this blog if anything changes, though.

The ARLUDIK galerie in Paris specialize in animation exhibitions-maybe they would be worth contacting if you wish the show to travel. They are a commercial gallery & if the originals are already sold or privately owned they sell limited edition prints. They are in a wonderful location on the Ile Saint-Louis & represent Moebius, Giger, Pixar, Arthur de Pins, Blue Sky Studio etc.
